CivicLex launches partnership with Fayette County Public Schools
I’m thrilled to share some big news that’s been in the works for almost three years now!
CivicLex is launching a new collaboration in partnership with Fayette County Public Schools (KY) and Generation Citizen to bring transformative changes to how we approach civics education for high school students in Fayette County by helping young folks become more engaged in local government and local civic issues! 🎉
Led by our Director of Civic Education, Stephanie Mobley, we're working with teachers from each A1 High School in the county to map our local government resources onto their existing civics curriculum from the Kentucky Academic Standards, and then overlaying that with Generation Citizen's focus on student agency and civic action.
As part of this, we're bringing civic expos - think job fairs, but for civic and community engagement - directly to high schools to help students connect with the organizations that underpin our community's civic life. Midway through the year, students will find issues in the community they want to get engaged in, and then we'll end the academic year with a civics day, where students will propose ways to address these local civic issues.
This experimental, three-way partnership is a new approach for all of us - and it's a pilot! We're excited to build something that is context sensitive, works for teachers, and encourages young people to take action on civic issues in our community - regardless of the issue, regardless of where they stand on it.
A big thanks to Aaron Davis at FCPS and Megan Brandon at GC for being exceptional (and patient) partners and to Carly Muetterties for pushing us so hard to move into the K12 space. More big thank yous also go to Wesley Murry and the Murry Foundation and Jason Terrell and the Walton Family Foundation for their foundational support of this work.
